Hornstrandir is a large nature reserve in the north of the Westfjords.
There is no permanent human settlement and there is an absolute ban on engines of any kind. The area is not allowed to be driven on with a vehicle and helicopters are also not allowed to land. Violations of this ban are punishable by very high fines and companies that do not comply can lose their license.
There are a few cabins that offer hikers a place to stay. But without running hot water and the electricity comes from solar panels. And there are also campsites.
Hornstrandir is usually reached by boat from a licensed company in Ísafjörður.
However, since there are no fortified harbors in Hornstrandir either, you are brought ashore in a bay with a zodiac.
